Preface
Club Sociale Italiano is slowly dying.
Aldo Gagliardi, as the president of the club, has been attending to many funerals. Not surprising at his stage of life that many of his friends, paisani, and club members are passing on. Now, he is struggling to keep the club alive as the membership declines. When the Italian government cut funding for the club’s Italian classes he had to make the difficult decision to cancel them. There wasn’t much interest in them and the club could no longer afford to offer them.
When he made the announcement at the annual meeting all hell breaks loose.
Roberto Madeo has no interest in running for the club’s presidency. While a member of the club he doesn’t spend much time there. He’s too busy with his law practice and spending time with his wife, Alice, and their two children Katie and Allen.
His mother and sister complain about Aldo canceling the Italian classes, it caught his attention. They’ve always been complaining about Aldo. They thought he’s been the club president far too long and it was time for him to retire. Especially, since he wasn’t in the best of health. They also feel he’s the main reason that the club was in decline. They suggest that Roberto toss his hat into the ring.
Roberto is reluctant at first. Then for reasons he can’t really explain he decides to sendi in campo turning a sleepy club election into a tight race.
Who’ll win the club’s presidency? Who’ll be the best to save the club from vanishing? The ailing old fox or the young lion?
