Roberto Madeo
We're first introduced to Roberto Madeo when he accompanied his mother, Alphonsina, to a viewing at a funeral home. After a long illness the husband of Angelina Bauslino, his mother's friend from the old country, had passed away.
A few days later, his mother tells him they had announced, at the club’s annual meeting, the cancellation of the Italian classes. He was somewhat annoyed by the news since he wanted his two children to learn Italian, so they could speak with their nonna and their relatives. Both his mother and younger sister, Adelina, agreed that it was time for the current president, Aldo Gagliardi, to retire. They tell him Aldo has been the president far too long. He is getting old, set in his ways, and is having health problems. New blood needed to be found. They tease him saying that he should run for the club’s presidency.
Roberto has been a member of the Il Club Sociale Italiano for many years, but he never was particularly interested in the club’s affairs. He was rather ambivalent about entering the club’s elections. Part of him doesn’t want the club to disappear, but he also has to take care of his wife and young family. On a spur of the moment, he decides to toss his hat into the ring. He knows that Alda would be a tough opponent. He would be if he’s been the club’s president for so many years.
Once he’s in the running he starts to realize how tough the sly old fox is.
